Health Studies - Assistant Professor of Health Studies - 000363

The University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Health Studies to begin in August 2023. A doctoral degree in public health or a closely related field must be completed prior to the start date.

The department welcomes applicants from a variety of fields within public health, including epidemiology, global health, health policy, health behavior, environmental health, public health nutrition, public health communication, and population medicine, among others. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach two of the three core courses for the health studies major (health policy, global health, and epidemiology). Under Richmond’s “teacher-scholar” model, professors typically teach undergraduate courses, author peer-reviewed scholarship, mentor student researchers, and participate in departmental and university governance.

Health Studies is a vibrant and growing department that equips students with theoretical and empirical frameworks for understanding the social, cultural, environmental, biological, psychological, ethical, economic, legal, and policy contexts that shape individual and population health. Program alumni work in medicine and other clinical professions, public heath, healthcare policy and management, and many other health-related fields.

The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With nearly 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and more than 90% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is remarkably student-centered, focused on preparing students “to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society.”

The University of Richmond is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body, and to modeling an inclusive campus community which values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development, and institutional success. Our academic community strongly encourages applications that are in keeping with this commitment. These materials should substantively and explicitly engage with notions of equity and inclusive education. Candidates should provide the names and contact information for three references who may be asked, at a later date, to submit letters of recommendation. Review of applications will commence on September 19, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.
